The landscape concept for this important Catholic church site which is officially designated as the first Catholic parish location in California, is intended to respect and preserve the Old Town San Diego historic setting and provide a welcoming sanctuary to the general public, while offering a place to gather for parish community events. The main plaza uses strong rectilinear forms and terra-cotta colored banding to accentuate the classical revival architecture and define use areas. In contrast, naturalistic and organic lines define the Virgin of Guadalupe shrine area, reinforcing the spiritual encounter. The design intent of this area is to transport the viewer as a witness of the Virgin’s original appearance to Native American Juan Diego.
